The Companion Victor Destroyed
Siobhán Calder
She was torn apart before she ever opened her eyes, but the North Sea gave her back her breath.

“Two rival anatomists, one chair, and a nun who brings them corpses that are still breathing.”
At the College of San Lázaro, an old lazaretto on a Galician estuary that reeks of quicklime and four thieves' vinegar, the anatomist Brais Mújica de Lema opens a corpse and finds his own signature cut and, beside the spine, a sliver of limestone inscribed in the hand of Julián Caunedo, the rival who has been gone from Galicia for seven years. The next day Caunedo returns to contest the only chair. Both men hide galvanic experiments the Church would send to the stake, and Sister Benigna de la Maza, the nun who supplies their dead, keeps both their notebooks.
“In San Lázaro, the flesh never rests: it only learns to wait beneath a thicker layer of salt.”
“The clumsy anatomist searches for the cause of demise; the knowing one seeks the cleft through which to retain the breath.”
“Whoever sets down their sins in calfskin has already accepted that the fire will devour their hands.”
“The click cut off sharply, with the dull violence of a cord snapping underwater.”
“There are seven open entries since Candlemas that still bear no burial signature.”
“They hated each other with the meticulous devotion of those who have only a single mirror to look into.”
“Faith demands clean miracles; necessity settles for breathing monsters.”
“Cracking the bone was the least of it; what weighed was the air the cavity held.”
“Not enough tension in the arc, colleague. We mustn't disappoint the table.”
“Two cannot fit, boy. Your vanity won't fit alongside my files.”
