The City That Forgot the Rain·Episode 02

The Tower of the Dry Clock

~2 min · 340 words

The spiral staircase of the main tower had one hundred and forty-two gray granite steps, worn smooth at their centers by generations of bellringers long forgotten. The bronze of the bells had been melted down in the third year of the drought to strike emergency coinage, leaving an empty chamber at the top of the belfry through which the wind howled like a wounded beast.

Vera rested her forehead against the wrought-iron railing. From this vantage, San Telmo appeared as a terracotta scale model of baked roof tiles. But what stole the breath was not the city—it was the proximity of the Drop. Barely thirty yards separated her from the aqueous sphere.

Through its convex surface, the world appeared inverted and steeped in indigo. Inside the water there were no air bubbles, no silt: only shapes. Figures moving with infinite slowness: children running barefoot across rain-soaked cobblestones, black umbrellas unfurled beneath a slate sky, and a woman in a crimson coat fastening a brass latch upon a window.

—That woman... —Vera whispered. Her breath misted against the warm air of the tower.

It was her mother. Or the memory her mother had left behind before vanishing on the very night the sky sealed itself shut forever. The figure within the Drop repeated that singular motion without respite: the pale hand pushing wood, the latch sliding home, and a fleeting upward glance—right toward where Vera stood now.

A dry click behind her made her turn. Old Mateo, the blind cartographer from the archives, stood on the landing, leaning upon his ash wood cane.

—Do not try to touch it, girl —the old man said without looking at her—. If you break the surface tension with impatient fingers, what falls upon us will not be water, but seven years of unshed tears. And not a single roof in this city was built to endure such weight.

—She is inside, Don Mateo. I can see her.

—We all see what we lack, Vera. That is the trap of water that refuses to fall.

You decide

How should Vera respond to Mateo’s warning?
